Shared Memories From

Hometown

Malverne, New York

I was working in NYC in 1986 when the Mets won the World Series, and I was a big fan. Each day, I would take the train in from Long Island and then walk to my office on Madison Avenue, between 40th and 41st Street. I always followed the same route, which took me through a parking facility that connected 35th to 36th Street.

On this particular day, I had purchased copies of the Daily News and New York Post to save and send to my dad, who was living in Florida. (I still have the copies!) I had them in hand as I walked through the parking garage. It was pretty early in the morning—and who do I run into, parking his car, but Ron Darling!

Did I get him to autograph my newspapers? No, of course not. That would’ve been the smart thing to do. Instead, I grabbed Ron Darling and kissed him! Then I just went on my merry way. Every time I think about that day, I could kick myself.

There used to be a magazine called MLB Insiders Club that I subscribed to in 2011. I sent this memory to the member letters section, and they published it—and even sent me a check for $100!
